The Haida Gwaii were an indigenous nation along the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. Their main territory was archipelago of Haida Gwaii in northern British Columbia, although many lived across the water in Southeast Alaska. These people lived on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Island) for thousands of years. The Natives of the Northwest Coast have been a nation of Natives with everyone’s attention. Haida peoples were highly respected by their peers and those they traded with, and they were feared by those who were at war with them. Even though the Haida were very popular, they had an extremely complex social organization system. They divided themselves into two moieties the raven and the Eagle. The style of life and art have survived an extremely long time without too much deviation from the original plans, this nation likes to keep their lives as traditional as possible. The Haida used many tools to provide for their nation, such as roughly flaked stone tool, an ocean canoe, micro blades (ideally made from obsidian), sledgehammers, adzes, hand mauls and wedges for splitting the wood. Typically the male chiefs of the lineage or family were passed through the eldest sister’s son. So that when a chief passed on, his oldest sister’s eldest son would be named chief and need to fight and fend for their nation.
